A Texas man has been ordered to pay $2.5 million in civil penalties and a criminal fine for his illegal use of counterfeit Viagra.

Cynthia J. Brown, 60, was found guilty in October 2013 of illegally selling counterfeit Viagra, fake erectile dysfunction drugs, and a drug called "sildenafil" online for the purpose of marketing and selling a product called "Viagra."

The charges were announced today by the Texas Attorney General's Office, and a criminal complaint has been issued against Brown.

"I was prescribed Viagra and I bought the drug online," Brown said in a video statement.

"My doctor prescribed it to me and I have been having erectile issues for about four years. I took the pills about a week ago and have been taking them for about a year now."

Brown had been on Viagra for about four months.

"I'm really pissed off and upset that I didn't take it and I've been taking it for about a year and a half now. I'm not ashamed of it and I wouldn't do anything to harm myself," Brown said.

"I am the first person to be charged with selling the drug in Texas."

The Viagra product was manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and sold by Eli Lilly & Co. in 1999.

According to the lawsuit, Brown's co-conspirators allegedly made approximately $25,000 from selling counterfeit Viagra to their customers and selling it on the Internet.

"When I bought the fake Viagra online, I bought it on the Internet and I have been doing this since June 2009," Brown said in the statement.

Brown was ordered to pay $2.5 million in civil penalties and a criminal fine for his illegal marketing and selling of the drug.

The case was transferred to the state's attorney's office and is being prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney David G. Smith.
